The dangers of hiring the right people

We’ve all done it. We’ve been trying to decide where to buy something. We open up our browser and search for whatever we need. You notice that there are several choices for whatever you may need. The information is right at your fingertips! You look at the ratings, and notice that one place has a rating of 2.1 with hundreds of reviews. You can’t not look – it has to be a mistake – there’s no way a place can be THAT bad! Review after review talks about rude service, indifference, missed deadlines, and broken promises. They say they will NEVER shop there again.

You decide to go to the next option, with a rating of 4.7 and hundreds of reviews as well. The difference in those reviews? They talk about the great service they had, they name the person that helped them, they may even name the owner, who engaged with them to make their experience even better. There are stories about how they went the extra mile, and gave them that extra pickle on their sandwich. They declare their loyalty for that business.

What is the real difference between these two places that may very well be selling the exact same product? The difference is the people behind the counter. The people answering the phones. The people discovering the needs of shoppers. The people helping to carry purchases out to the shopper’s vehicle. The differentiating factor is that these team members care (I have a strong dislike for the term employees – Your business success is defined by the people on your team)

The highly rated business spends time selecting the right candidate, they interview for personality and passion! The lower rated place might save a few cents an hour on labor, and ends up with the people that just need a paycheck. The highly rated place rewards their team’s accomplishments, celebrates success, and sets the expectation for what great looks like. The lower rated place tells the employees what they are doing wrong, how slow business is, and that they need to do more to help out.

Notice the difference? What type of environment do you create for your team? Would you like to know how to be the place with the great online reviews? The team members that smile because they are so happy, rather than being told they need to smile?

The dangers of hiring the right people is that you will be that highly rated place, and you will likely need to hire more people to keep up with the influx of new business! You will feel comfortable in taking a vacation, and leaving the team to run the show!
